Creating a local campagin through Adwords is an extremely cost effective method of local advertising. Adwords is Google’s flagship advertising product, it allows for advertisers to start a campaign with vitually no startup costs. ($50 is the minimum ammount, which is advertising dollars)
Targeted campaigns through Adwords is extremely streamlined as you can target specific keywords searched only by users located within specific areas. If you would like to target a region, Google has a “map overlay” feature which lets you click on areas on a map and select a region of your choice.
When building a campaign for a local business, try to focus the ads around “awareness”. You would like your visitors to pick up a phone and contact you, send you an email inquiry or simply visit your store location. In this sense, you may want to add your phone number, or location in your actual ad text. When users see your ad, they may simply phone your number even without clicking on the ad. Creating awareness campaigns will also attract customers into your store as they may have seen an ad on the internet beforehand and are aware of your existance.
Continuous optimization is necessary for any campaign run through Google. This is not any sort of automated system, daily checkups are required. If you leave a campaign unattended, it may either rack up a massive bill for poorly targeted traffic, or it may not receive any traffic at all.
