How much should I charge for advertising on my website?

I own an well-respected health information website that is very popular and is unique in its category. It has excellent search results on the first page of Google and has a lot of real content. Per day it gets about 30,000 page views, 6,000 unique visitors, and 200,000 hits. The site is about 4 years old. I have a few small advertisers but now some big companies are looking to advertise. I don’t have a formal rate sheet, just a little file I put together pulling some inexpensive numbers out of the air. Now it’s time to make a real rate sheet, but I’ve never done it before. What should I charge these big companies for banner ads or small square ads on my site? How do I make up a real rate sheet? Can someone give me some ballpark figures? I don’t want to overprice it, but I certainly don’t want to underprice it either. Thank you!!

I would suggest looking into Google ad words as if you were an advertiser and see that they charge. You can basesome of your rates on that. Next, again, pretend you’re a company with something to sell and Google “internet advertising agencies.” Ask them what a particular type of ad will cost you based on your traffic. With those rates, you can base yours.
