They may symbolize a particular social class position or status. Others are influenced by the consumer’s judgment of what other people might think about them, for example clothes.

An individual does not need to be a member of a group for influence to occur. His behavior and life style can be greatly determined by emulation of the people in a group to which he aspires to belong.

The key point is that the relationship between the target customer and the reference group should be motivational and psychologically significant.
